Do you like to learn new things? Would you be interested in learning about the environment that we live in, and how it impacts the surrounding areas and the plants that are in that area? Once you have learned something new, are you interested in sharing what you know with other people in your community? Are you interested in sharing your knowledge with elementary school age children?

If this describes you, then you may be a candidate for our 2024 Pender County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer class! We are looking for those people who are interested in sharing their knowledge through our outreach programs, including talking with the public and sharing with our local elementary schools.

Come join us and become a Pender County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. You will meet some wonderful people who share your interest, and you will have a good time while doing it.

Submit an application for our next class, which starts January 10, 2024. The class is every Wednesday for 17 weeks, from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. at the NCSU Cooperative Extension Office located at 801 S. Walker Street, Burgaw, North Carolina 28425.

The Burgwin-Wright House is excited to welcome back local artist, Janet B. Sessoms, for her show "Radiance" inspired by her love for light, color and contrast.

The opening reception will be held on November 24 from 6-9pm during Fourth Friday Gallery Nights.

Sessoms' artworks will be on exhibit and for sale until January 20. Admission is free. The gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm.

About the Art

Janet considers her style to be painterly realism and enjoys interpreting any subject that is lit in a way to catch her attention. She delights in color and contrast, but mostly finds pleasure in challenging herself to create something that pleases her and others. Some of the words her collectors and friends use to describe her work are, “Serene, Colorful, Radiant, Inspiring, Realistic, and full of Light”. She is an award-winning artist, but more importantly she gets to do daily what she waited many years to begin. A day of painting is a great day for Janet and one that she thanks God for providing.

About the Artist

A Bachelor of Art in Home Economics from Meredith, a marriage and three children, and an Associate degree from Southeastern Community College in art, finally lead Janet to UNC Pembroke, graduating with a second degree in Art Education. She taught art in the public schools for twenty-two years in Whiteville City and Wilmington. Upon retiring in the spring of 2012, she began her lifelong dream of developing her own art skills. She has visited museums and art exhibits in the USA and Europe and has studied with nationally known professional artists.

Join Braver Angels of Wilmington NC and other locals from across the political spectrum for an open, friendly, and respectful discussion about gun control. After introductions, cookie munching, and setting some ground rules, we’ll dive into the topic.

You don’t have to be an expert or agree with anyone there. Just bring your personal viewpoint, speak if you want, and be willing to hear what other people think. Don’t you sometimes wonder?

Braver Angels of Wilmington puts people before politics. We realize that political animosity is not good for any of us — our families, community, or country.

And it doesn’t have to be this way. Every time we get together, we find out that conservatives, liberals, and independents can have respectful conversations about the issues. Social media, many news outlets, and politicians make us believe that everyone is at one political extreme or the other…but we’re not. Americans have more in common than what divides us, and we’re better off united. If you’re tired of the problem, come be a part of the solution.

A title known the world over, Elf The Musical is a must-produce holiday musical that can easily become an annual tradition for any theatre. Based on the cherished 2003 New Line Cinema hit, Elf features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer) and Chad Beguelin (Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway), with a book by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).
Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Handel's Messiah performed by the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Choir, NC Baroque Orchestra, and featured soloists, conducted by Brendan Conner. Tickets are $30 on Eventbrite or on sale at the door. This annual favorite is Dec 7th & 8th at 7:30 pm at St. Paul's.
