Calling all bird lovers! Join us for a very special opportunity to celebrate our feathered friends when John Gerwin, Research Curator of Ornithology from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, visits Whiteville for a day of activities and discussion free to the public. Learn about bird behavior, local visitors, wildlife-friendly coffee, and avian anatomy. See the schedule for this exciting event below:
7:30-10:30am: Bird Walk @ Helms Nature Preserve. Join John Gerwin and NCMNSW for a morning of bird watching at the Helms Nature Preserve in Whiteville. This beautiful preserve, maintained by Wildlife Action of NC, is located on private land and registration is required to receive the meeting location. John Gerwin presents "Birds of Eastern NC.”What birds might you see across the landscapes of Eastern NC? Learn what to expect in your backyard and ask your burning bird questions! 2-3pm: Meet Me at the Museum @ NCMNSW. "From Farms to Binoculars: Birds and People on Sustainable Coffee Farms in Nicaragua.” John will talk about his work with birds and farmers on sustainable coffee plantations. Learn how coffee is grown and harvested on sites where wildlife-friendly practices are integrated into the farming systems. 3:30-4pm: Avian Anatomy @ NCMNSW. What makes a bird...a bird? Learn about bird anatomy through a dissection demonstration.

Join us for Art in the Yard on 9/20 10a-4pm and 9/21 12-4pm! Follow the map to participating artists homes where they will be displaying & selling art in their yards, home studios or garages! This unique event gives you an opportunity to meet the artists and view their exclusive work. Interactive maps are available online here: https://islandartscouncil.net/art-in-yardOr you can pick up a copy at Island Arts Council tent at Good Hops Brewery or various businesses on Pleasure Island before and during the days of the event. The Island Arts Council's tent will be open each day of the event. Also at Good Hops, the option to buy raffle tickets to win donated art by the participating artists – drawings at the end of each event day.
