Sock Hop Ukulele Style at the Lazy Pirate
CAROLINA BEACH, NC: The Ukulele Strummers of the Cape Fear are holding their
Annual Fall/Halloween Ukulele Strum-Along on Thursday, October 15 at The Lazy Pirate,
701 N. Lake Park Blvd in Carolina Beach from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Come early for
social time with fellow ukulele strummers from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The theme this year will be Ukulele Sock Hop, a Trip Back to the Music of the 50’s.
Ukulele strummers of all abilities are invited to join us for a group ukulele strum-along
that will feature popular music of the era. Music will be projected and the public is invited
to attend for some twistin’’ good fun.
1950’s attire is welcome, so dig out the Bobby socks, slick back your hair and dust off
that old poodle skirt. Music will include some spinnin’ good fun like Splish Splash,
Hound Dog, Rock Around the Clock, That’ll Be the Day and much more.
Music and information can be found at www.ukestrumcf.org. Music will be projected, so
no need to bring a music stand. Just lace up your saddle shoes, tune up your ukulele
and join us for a rockin’ good time. It’ll be a gas.
The event is free to attend. Food and beverages are available for purchase at The Lazy
Pirate.
Ukulele Strummers of the Cape Fear is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
playing the ukulele through educational, cultural and social activities. Our strumming
group is open to all strummers of all abilities and meets monthly the fourth Tuesday of
the month at Hannah Block Community Arts Center, 120 S. 2nd Street in Wilmington. For

Against political resistance and industry skepticism, Latino director and playwright, Luis Valdez pushes Chicano storytelling from the fields to the film screen with La Bamba and Zoot Suit. His storytelling has crafted iconic works that challenge, celebrate, and expand America’s story. This documentary is an enlightening biography and defiant assertion of Chicano identity.

There will be a community discussion with the filmmaker and community partners after the screening. This screening is brought to you by South Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium, Cucalorus Film Foundation, and WHQR.

Commissioned in 1941 and awarded 15 battle stars, the USS North Carolina is widely regarded as the most haunted location in North Carolina. Join Haunted Rooms America for a six-hour after-hours ghost hunt aboard the ship, featured on SyFy and A&E's Ghost Hunters. Guests investigate the decks and compartments in small groups, including areas normally off limits to the public such as the site of the 1942 torpedo strike, using professional ghost hunting equipment provided on the night. The evening ends with free roam time to investigate on your own with the team close at hand. Ages 18 and over, or 16-17 with a responsible adult. Tickets are limited.

Join the knowledgeable guides from Cape Fear Bird Observatory and their partners for a family friendly fun nature walk! Meeting at the Greenfield Lake boathouse (near the tennis courts) for an informational session on the third Saturday of every month, usually beginning at 9:00 AM followed by a narrated 60 minute stroll around the lake looking at interesting birds, plants, mammals, reptiles, and other fascinating wild things. All are welcome! No registration required. Please bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water and comfortable walking shoes.

The Bridge Presbyterian Church in Leland is hosting a community-wide Flea Market, Craft Fair and Yard Sale event on Saturday October 17th from 10-am to 2pm.

Money raised will go to support 12 of The Bridge's Community Mission Partners right here in Brunswick County! Event will be held at The Bridge Presbyterian Church located at 1444 Lanvale Rd, Leland NC, 28451. The event will be open to the public. Food and beverages will be available, along with music throughout the event, and the New Hope Clinic will be bringing their "mobile clinic" to offer free basic health screenings!
