Against political resistance and industry skepticism, Latino director and playwright, Luis Valdez pushes Chicano storytelling from the fields to the film screen with La Bamba and Zoot Suit. His storytelling has crafted iconic works that challenge, celebrate, and expand America’s story. This documentary is an enlightening biography and defiant assertion of Chicano identity.

There will be a community discussion with the filmmaker and community partners after the screening. This screening is brought to you by South Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium, Cucalorus Film Foundation, and WHQR.

Join the knowledgeable guides from Cape Fear Bird Observatory and their partners for a family friendly fun nature walk! Meeting at the Greenfield Lake boathouse (near the tennis courts) for an informational session on the third Saturday of every month, usually beginning at 9:00 AM followed by a narrated 60 minute stroll around the lake looking at interesting birds, plants, mammals, reptiles, and other fascinating wild things. All are welcome! No registration required. Please bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water and comfortable walking shoes.

Whether you are new to the stage or looking to sharpen your performance skills, these engaging adult acting classes offer a welcoming environment to explore character development stage presence, improvisation, and performance technique. Students will benefit from Diane’s extensive professional background and supportive teaching style while gaining confidence, creativity, and stronger acting skills in a fun and collaborative atmosphere.
