Public defenders face an uphill battle, trying to serve hundreds of clients while dealing with relatively low pay. But their work helps keep the court system moving — and can actually save money in the long run. Now, New Hanover County’s chief public defender is gearing up to take on those challenges, and bring those benefits, to Pender County.

About 42% of the nation’s counties have declining populations — but not ones in the Cape Fear region. That’s according to U.S. Census Bureau data released this week.

Candidate filing for most 2021 city, town, and village elections in North Carolina begins at noon this Friday, July 2.

As the Cape Fear region continues to see moderate drought conditions, county officials have issued burn bans and water conservation alerts. In addition, the North Carolina Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits for 26 counties, including New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick.
