The ongoing federal government shutdown is expected to delay access to SNAP benefits for approximately 1.4 million North Carolinians, including nearly 57,000 people living in the Cape Fear region. WHQR has compiled a list of resources for those struggling with food insecurity as well as donation dropoff locations for those trying to help.

On Wednesday, October 8, WECT, WHQR, and Port City Daily will jointly host a forum for candidates for the Wilmington city council and mayoral races. The event will be held at WHQR's station and will be open to the public and livestreamed.

The North Carolina ACLU filed suit against New Hanover County Clerk of Court Jan Kennedy, claiming it was the only county in the state that had not responded to public records request the organization had made over the last two years.

North Carolina is a national leader with more than 8 million hogs and close to a billion chickens and turkeys in production. Most are raised on an industrial scale, in what are known as "concentrated animal feeding operations," or CAFOs. They produce tons of waste, alter the landscape, and present new environmental challenges. WHQR's series CAFO Country took a closer look at the issue.

Much of the city is still shaken up following the explosion on New Centre Drive on Tuesday, in which a number of firefighters were injured. As previously reported, the building was evacuated before the blast. But new details provided by the fire department paint a clearer picture of what happened.

Eyewitnesses report that the gas explosion took place at the planned Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center as a result of a hit-and-run, which damaged an exterior gas line. Three firefighters were injured in the incident, one seriously.
