WHQR is celebrating journalism and our service to the community with a wonderful fundraising luncheon on Thursday, May 22 at 12 pm at the Hotel Ballast in downtown Wilmington.
You can join a WHQR table or host your own. We ask for a suggested donation of $125 or more per guest at the luncheon or a host may choose to cover the $1,250 goal for the table and invite friends (payable by cash, check or credit card) . To join a table as an individual (s), email Mary Bradley and indicate the names of who would like to come. If you'd like to host a table, you can also email Mary for more information.

Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this humorous, hopeful and achingly human play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women in her family and the founding document that shaped their lives. The play delves into the document's meaning, its history, and its relevance to contemporary issues, sparking critical discussions about American society and its values.Schreck's personal stories and family anecdotes bring the Constitution to life, making it relatable and human. The play addresses current events and debates, encouraging audiences to consider the Constitution's impact on their own lives and the nation. The production includes a live debate segment, engaging audiences and prompting reflection on the Constitution's meaning and relevance. On Friday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm in CFCC Union Station Auditorium, a free concert of music by local composers will be presented, featuring Barbara Gallagher, Julia Walker Jewell, and Algernon Robinson, performed by Mary Gheen; Carter Jewell Hammerski, Annie and Isabelle Jewell (pictured); Roy Robuck; Rebecka Rose; Helena Spencer; and Laura York. Part of the "ComposerWorks" concert series, the program is expected to last around 45 minutes and is close to the Fourth Friday Gallery Walk venues, thus making a melodious musical "prelude" to the visual art offerings by local artists in downtown Wilmington.
