Primary 2020

Joe Biden is now the clear front-runner for the Democratic Presidential nomination after Super Tuesday.  Michael Bloomberg dropped out Wednesday morning and endorsed Biden – and North Carolina has proven to be an important state in this development.

Three Brunswick County Republican candidates will advance to the November elections. The 2020 primary victors include Pat Sykes for Commissioner in District 3, David Robinson for Board of Education in District 2, and Steven Barger for Board of Education in District 4. Those two latter races ended in upsets.

Democrat Christopher Ward will challenge incumbent Republican David Rouzer for North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District in November. Ward won the 3-way Democratic primary in the Tuesday, Mar. 3 election.

The map for North Carolina House District 19 was redrawn for this year. District 19 moves from northern New Hanover County to southern New Hanover County and gains most of southeastern Brunswick County. Two Republicans and two Democrats faced off, to see who will be in the November race.

There were 15 candidates for New Hanover County Board of Commissioners in Tuesday’s primary. Six Democrats and nine Republicans. Three winners from each party made the ballot for November. Meanwhile four Republicans battled it out for the county’s Board of Education. 

North Carolina House Districts have new maps this year. That means Representative Ted Davis, Jr., a Republican from New Hanover County who has represented House District 19 since 2012, competed in the newly created House District 20. The new District 20 covers the northeastern tip of New Hanover County. This this race wasn’t close.

Tuesday is Primary Day in North Carolina, and electioneers -- people stumping for their candidates at polling locations – say they’re seeing a steady flow of voters.  And despite their partisan passions, they are surprisingly devoid of vitriol.  At least on this day…

Tuesday March 3rd is Primary Election Day in North Carolina, and polls are open until 7:30 this evening.  As I traveled around between Brunswick and New Hanover County polling locations, I spoke with voters about the issues that drove them to vote.  At most stops, I saw people electioneering – that is campaigning for their candidates.  But not at Williston Middle School.

Early voting in the 2020 Primaries is underway through this Saturday, February 29th.  Election Day is next Tuesday, March 3rd.  In the race for New Hanover County Commissioner, six Democratic candidates are competing for three open seats.  Don Betz, Leslie Cohen, and Travis Robinson are half the Democratic slate.  

In the race for the New Hanover County Commission, John Lyons, Ricky Meeks and Harry Knight are three of the nine Republicans in the running. The top three vote getters in the primary will move on to the November Election.

David Robinson and Catherine Cooke are facing off in the Republican primary for the District Two seat on the Brunswick County Board of Education. Cooke is an incumbent, while Robinson is a veteran of the Holden Beach Fire Department and rescue squad.
