CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

CoastLine: The Complicated Psychology Behind Intimate Partner Violence

Center for Family Violence Prevention
Cycle of abuse

This broadcast of CoastLine originally aired on November 12, 2014.

Investigations over alleged cases of domestic violence continue to populate newscasts on a near-daily basis.

In recent weeks, there have been public allegations regarding a contestant on the TV show Top Chef; George Foreman’s son; NASCAR Driver Kurt Busch; football player Ray McDonald (in that case, prosecutors chose not to file charges), and, most famously, Football Player Ray Rice – whose appeal of his lifetime ban from the NFL is still awaiting a verdict.

Why are we hearing more about abusive dynamics in relationships – and what resources are available to help victims and perpetrators?

How much is our culture to blame?

In this edition of CoastLine, we sort through some of these questions and the complicated dynamics surrounding violence between intimate partners.

Guests:

Dr. Carrie Clements, Professor of Psychology, University of North Carolina at Wilmington
