CoastLine: UNCW Chancellor On The Growth And Challenges Of Last 3 Years -- And His Name

UNCW
Chancellor Jose Sartarelli has led UNCW since 2015. He's presided over the two largest gifts to the university in its history.

Jose Sartarelli, Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, took the helm three years ago – in 2015.

Chancellor Sartarelli comes to Wilmington from West Virginia University – where he was the Dean of the College of Business and Economics.  He was named WVU's first chief global officer in 2013.  Prior to his foray into higher education, the Chancellor worked with Johnson & Johnson as pharmaceutical group chairman for Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America.  He also worked for Eli Lilly and Company for five years in Asia.

In 2015, he told us that fostering diversity on campus was high on the agenda.  He also pointed to the creation of a strategic plan as one of his more urgent priorities.  He’s faced some challenges – including serious heart surgery earlier this year and devastating damage from Hurricane Florence.

On this edition of CoastLine, we find out how he’s doing on those fronts, what’s in the strategic plan, and what he’s learned over the last three years – including the challenges he still faces.

Rachel hosts and produces CoastLine, an award-winning hourlong conversation featuring artists, humanitarians, scholars, and innovators in North Carolina.
