Thalian Hall is proud to present "Works by Hand: over twenty hand-carved linoleum prints by Janette Hopper".
Through metaphor and narrative, these prints speak about communication and sharing. The nudes symbolize innocents, freedom, and honesty and are inspired by images of new and old masters and by direct observation.
Janette K. Hopper has always enjoyed figure drawing and one of her first narratives was when she was in elementary school of the Piped Piper in color crayon. Fortunately, the Boise Idaho School System had excellent art programs and she had encouragement from her parents.
Throughout her education and life, she has been a keen observer, partly because her father taught her that if she was bored, she was not looking. As she continued her education at the University of Idaho, she was introduced to drawing the figure. She continued that work at Boise State University and eventually while getting her MFA at the University of Oregon. Her other major interest was the panoramic landscape view so she has always climbed to viewpoints and observed nature and is known for her paintings.
She began making prints in Denmark while on a Fulbright. Artistically, Denmark was a freeing experience for all her artistic ideals. Here she could see people of all ages enjoying the nude figure in art, the North Sea and the architecture of the historic city either by walking or riding her bike.
She has always thought of the human body as a wondrous gift to house our spirit and our mind and with which we share love and companionship with others. As an artist, she believes that art speaks to all aspects of life and it must be honest. You will find these ideals in her prints. Web: www.janettekhopper.com Instagram: janettekhopperart
