International Observe the Moon NightSaturday, October 4 from 6 to 8 pmFREE EVENTRain or Shine! International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide celebration of lunar science and exploration and occurs in early fall when the Moon is around first quarter. Join us for hands-on activities, telescope and binocular Moon observation, themed story time and more!
Event activities will take place inside the museum and outdoors in the Museum Park.
Activities for the evening include:• Enjoy interactive stories at our Stellar Story Corner.• View the Moon through telescopes and binoculars and get stargazing tips from members of Cape Fear Astronomical Society. • Color your own space helmet and pose for pictures with your “astronaut crew”.• Build a Moon Phaser to see the order of the Moon’s phases. • Learn to measure angular distance with your hand and find your way around the night sky. • Join the fictional Lunar Travel Bureau and create an advertisement to encourage vacationing on Mars.• Unleash your inner graffiti artist as you tag the Museum Park with Moon-inspired chalk art. • Purchase tasty snacks and beverages from KONA Ice and Brighter Days Coffee.

Cape Fear Fencing Association 6 week beginning fencing class starts October 6th at 6:30 pm in the basement of the Tileston gym, 5th and Ann Streets. Class will meet for approximately 1 hour on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students should wear loose fitting clothing and sneakers. Appropriate for ages 8 - 80. Cost is $60 plus a $34 membership to USA Fencing (purchased on usafencing.org) good until July 31, 2026. Taught by Internationally accredited instructor.

What’s Brewing in Science: Deepwater Horizon Oil SpillWednesday, October 15 at 6 pmFREE EVENT at Hi-Wire BreweryMeet us at Hi-Wire Brewing (1020 Princess Street), grab a drink, and join Jeff Hren from GE-Hitachi as we learn about the actions that led to the largest marine oil spill in history.
The presentation reviews the actions of the operators of the oil rig and the engineering support staff as they designed and drilled the well that eventually led to the largest offshore oil spill. The focus is on:
• How a team of people get use to a very hazardous environment that is right below their feet• The real forces of time, money, and schedule, and the short-sighted decisions that are made when under pressure• The importance of sharing Operating Experience• The necessity of a strong regulator when a money-making operation is performing hazardous work
Jeff has spent most of his career developing technical leaders in the operation of nuclear reactors. He works for GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy as a Project Manager. He enjoys creating and delivering presentations focusing on engineering accidents that seek to heighten our awareness of Human Performance (HU).
