“Does Nature Itself Have Rights?” Can we place nature's right to thrive as the primary goal of climate change and other environmental protection laws? Modern system-based science demonstrates that the natural world and humans are fundamentally interconnected. Rights of Nature is a legal theory that recognizes the essential worth of the natural systems in which we live and proposes inherent rights as associated with ecosystems and species, similar to the concept of fundamental human rights or corporate personhood. As of 2021, rights of nature laws exist in dozens of cities and counties throughout the United States.
