Isabel Holmes Preservation Project Creates Nightly Closures
Commuters who regularly rely on the Isabel Holmes bridge are facing some delays and detours. An 18 million dollar bridge preservation project is creating nightly lane and road closures that will last for nearly two years.
The project, managed by the state’s Department of Transportation, is expected to be completed by the spring of 2021. Until then, crews will close the bridge between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. every Sunday through Thursday. And while drivers may now need to factor in extra time for their commute, NCDOT Assistant Resident Engineer Wanda James says that the project is a necessary one.
"We are doing bridge preservation work. So we are taking and patching concrete... We're going to be doing total renovation on the control house... So we're just doing some rehabilitation work to extend the life of the bridge."
There will be no bridge closures on the weekends, and lane closures will be in place for some of the work.
