Writers' Week 2024: Both/And

Writers' Week 2024: Both/And

For Immediate Release

Department of Creative Writing Presents Writers’ Week Oct. 28 – Nov. 1

Join the Creative Writing Department at UNCW Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 for a special series of arts events during Writers' Week 2024. Each year, the department invites writers and literary professionals to campus for a week of readings, workshops, and craft talks in both poetry and prose. Events are free and open to the public, with no registration or ticketing required. The theme this year is “Both/And,” an exploration of the many ways we share stories, featuring writers, poets, and artists whose skills cross genres and artistic styles.

The week’s keynote speaker is Justin Torres, the National Book award-winning author of Blackouts, an experimental novel about queer history that NPR calls, “an ingenious deathbed conversation between two friends.” Also visiting is Janay Nachel Frazier, assistant art director whose work includes cover design for the Jordan Peele-edited Black horror anthology Out There Screaming, and memoirist Jaquira Díaz, whose award-winning book Ordinary Girls is currently in development for television. The department encourages everyone in the UNCW and greater Wilmington community to join us for inspiration and hope to offer participants a broader view of how stories can be made and shared and a deeper awareness of the ways community can nurture us even in our solitary pursuits.

Events will be held in Lumina Theater in the Fisher Student Center. See the link to our website for further information, including the Zoom link required for Friday’s virtual session alumni readings. A full schedule of events can be found at writersweek2024.sched.com.
