Did you have a favorite teacher growing up? Perhaps they inspired you to pursue the career you have today. Join Dr. Darcie Roten and Dr. Jan Davidson as they highlight some of the Hidden Heroes of Wilmington and North Carolina science. Women who inspire the next generation through teaching, exploration, and hands-on fun. Stay until the end for a classic (and tasty) liquid nitrogen ice-cream experiment—the kind you always wanted your teacher to do in the classroom.
About Our Presenters:
Dr. Darcie Roten, Science Interpreter at Cape Fear Museum, earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a doctorate from Emory University in Immunology. Her graduate studies focused on the immune system’s role in Parkinson’s disease. While in school, she volunteered for many informal science education opportunities which inspired her to pursue a career in museums. She has served as Cape Fear Museum’s science expert since 2018. She currently writes exhibit content, develops programs, and educates the public in all things science!
Dr. Jan Davidson, Historian at Cape Fear Museum, earned a PhD from the University of Delaware in 2000. Her doctoral dissertation explored the history of women railroad workers during World War I. Davidson worked at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (2000-2005) as the historian for the exhibit America on the Move, and is the co-author of On the Move, Transportation and the American Story. Jan has served as the Cape Fear Museum’s historian since 2005. Davidson currently researches the area’s history to create exhibition content, Museum programs, and to write This Month in History.
