A mockup of what the proposed art installation might look like. More than 4,000 people have signed a petition for a Black Lives Matter mural in Wilmington.

On Tuesday evening, City Council approved rezoning for a 78-unit apartment complex targeted for UNCW students on Racine Drive, and appropriated an additional $165,000 for municipal golf course clubhouse improvements. As for the public art installation in support of Black Lives Matter, that’s still an ongoing issue.

Tuesday’s City Council meeting ended without resolution. In public comments at the beginning of the meeting, several speakers highlighted the national progressive movement now taking place, and the need for Wilmington to be a part of it.

Wilmington resident Rebecca Trammel:

Perhaps we are here for such a time as this, and perhaps right now is the time to make changes that should have been made a long time ago. And now it is our opportunity and we each have a role to play.

After a lengthy discussion about a public art installation in support of Black Lives Matter, the council postponed a vote for two weeks with a commitment that action will be taken at their August 4th meeting.

City Council member Kevin Spears argued against delaying the vote, but ultimately agreed to the continuance.

The August 4th vote will also consider the creation of a designated public forum for artistic and cultural expression.
