Earlier this year, a Superior Court judge dismissed a case brought by a student against Cape Fear Community College and several other organizations, which alleged she was treated unfairly. But court documents, recordings, and interviews with the student show there's much more to the story — including evidence that CFCC both took action to remove two employees who were involved and tried to keep the initial complaints from media and the public.

"The burden of proof in the criminal justice system is much higher than that applied in the court of public opinion, and for good reason," the state's top financial crimes prosecutor wrote in a letter, recommending against pressing charges against Olson-Boseman, who served as both a county commissioner and state senator.

The budget abandons earlier attempts by Senate Republicans to expand the number of casinos in the state. It does include a new provision giving state legislators discretion over their own records — a move that has concerned government transparency advocates.

For Sunshine Week — a national initiative for news organizations to highlight issues of open government — WECT, WHQR, and Port City Daily teamed up to submit identical public record requests. They went out to local governments containing six of the largest law enforcement agencies in the tri-county area.
