NPR Live Coverage: Friday's impeachment defense proceedings before the U.S. Senate

Kevin McCoy

Former President Donald Trump is on trial for a second time in the Senate. This time, the House has impeached Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection. Trump's defense team denies he directly called for violence and argues that he should not be tried since he is no longer in office; they are also expected to argue that Trump's words on Twitter and on the day of the insurrection are protected speech under the First Amendment.

The House impeachment managers have tried to mount a 'pre-buttal' of the First Amendment defense; they have also said Trump must be held accountable for the violence at the Capitol. Watch the proceedings live.

Note: The proceedings may include explicit language and graphic images or video. Viewer and listener discretion is advised.

Proceedings are expected to begin on Friday, Feb. 12 at noon and last into the evening. The trial is currently expected to last into the weekend.
