Stand-up comedy is blossoming around southeastern North Carolina. Comedy enthusiasts can now catch comics in the act at local breweries, arts events, and theatrical venues. But while the arts scene flourished in the Cape Fear region, it was only 2014 that the first full-time comedy club opened in Wilmington. Before that, Timmy Sherrill and Cole Craven worked together in the basement of The Soapbox Laundro-Lounge as Nutt Street Comedy Room.
When The Soapbox closed in 2013, they moved their work to what's now known as the Dead Crow Comedy Room on Front Street in downtown Wilmington. If you exclude Myrtle Beach or Raleigh – it’s the only dedicated comedy club in the area.
On this edition, we look at the growth of stand-up in the Cape Fear region, what it’s like to be a comedian in a smaller market, and how the industry is changing.
