This week New Hanover County staff and planners met to discuss the new unified development ordinance, or UDO. It’s a guideline for how land is to be used and developed in the county. It will be months before the new ordinance is finalized.

New Hanover County Planning Director Wayne Clark is explaining the UDO project to local officials and residents in a crowded government center meeting room.
The ordinance will influence property development in the unincorporated parts of the county for years to come.
The zoning code was first adopted in 1969. County staff are now working on the new version, to make the code easier to understand, and incorporate more areas open to multiple-use.
Throughout the process, which is expected to last well into 2019, the county will hold regular public meetings like the one this week to get feedback from residents.
