Elections 2018: John Bauer Seeks To Battle Holly Grange in NC House District 20
John Bauer is one of three Democrats hoping to square off in November with North Carolina Representative Holly Grange, a Republican from New Hanover County. One idea Bauer is pushing is the creation of a public bank.
His two other priorities include repealing the sales tax added to services – such as auto mechanics and appliance repair. The relatively new sales tax, approved by the legislature in 2015, expanded the list of taxable services while cutting the state income tax. John Bauer says that move amounts to a tax on the poor and doesn’t generate that much revenue.
But it’s his first priority, he says, which could address a host of other fiscal issues.
"… the creation of a public bank which could save North Carolina taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in interest savings."
He looks to North Dakota’s public bank as a model.
"They’ve had it for about 100 years. Very conservative state. I look at it as a bipartisan issue to offer across the table if we have a Democratic majority. If not, Republicans look to save money. And it’s certainly something Democrats would like to put on our plate, as well."
He also wants to find housing for all homeless veterans in the state. House District 20 covers the northern portion of New Hanover County.
Early voting ends May 5th.
