GenX is in the local drinking water supply – albeit at significantly lower levels than six months ago. What kind of impact that has had or could have or will have on the people who drink the local water is still unclear.
It was June of this year that the news broke about Chemours dumping this unregulated chemical compound into the Cape Fear River at the site of its Fayetteville facility – which sits about 100 miles upriver from Wilmington. For years, local environmental advocates have expressed concerns about the pollutant load in the river – but scientists and regulators had a hard time testing for pollutants they could not identify. So there was a vague awareness that industries dumped effluent into the river, but nobody quantified it much more than that.
Then along came Detlef Knappe and his team from NC State – who brought into public focus the presence of unregulated, potentially toxic chemical compounds in the Cape Fear River. And that’s where we pick up the story of GenX…
