Greenfield Lake Culvert Project to Create Traffic Issues

Starting Monday night, traffic at the intersection of Carolina Beach Road, Front Street and South Third Street is going to change. That's because the Greenfield Lake culvert project is shifting into high gear.

If your daily commute includes South Third Street near Greenfield Lake, it’s time to consider the alternatives.

Third Street from Willard to the intersection of Carolina Beach will be sealed off at 9 o’clock tonight, and could stay that way the rest of the year.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is replacing the culvert that runs under Burnett Boulevard, a project originally slated for last year but delayed until after the Azalea Festival.

Motorists in the area are not thrilled, as many will face longer commute times.

“Probably another 10 or 15 minutes honestly, I come this way because traffic is not so bad in the morning if you have to get to the state port. Yeah it’s not going to be fun if I have to go up 17th Street and having to deal with that traffic, Market and everything. It is a bummer, definitely. Not happy about it.”

Front Street will remain open during the entire project.

According to the Department of Transportation, more than 21,000 vehicles drive through the intersection daily.

The DOT suggests alternative routes via Dawson and Wooster streets, Shipyard Boulevard, and 16th or 17th streets.
