New Hanover County Planners Seek Input from Next Generation of Citizens

Isabelle Shepherd, WHQR
County planners chat with students as they make recommendations for the future of New Hanover County.

New Hanover County is creating its Comprehensive Plan, which will determine how the community would like to see development occur over the next twenty-five years. Even the youngest citizens are offering input.

County planners visited Castle Hayne Elementary to speak with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Nicole Wolf-Camplin’s gifted classes. The students represent the next generation of residents, and their goals for the future of the county were very much in line with those set forth by the adult focus groups:

Wolf-Camplin: "We had lots of good ideas, just to highlight really quickly. We had zoos. We had a combination of businesses and residential together and comingled, and I think a lot of cities are doing that with planned cohousing spaces. We had some transportation inventions, looking at online education, examining safety in neighborhoods through security measures. This whole group seems to be sort of environmentally focused, yes? What do you have down there?" Education. "More on education?" I’ve got education.

Most of the students say they’d like to live in New Hanover County as adults.

NOTE: On this week’s Coastline, we’ll be discussing the comprehensive plans for the city, county, and region. What are these plans all about, and where are they taking us? Join the discussion on Wednesday at noon on WHQR.
