Brunswick County Commissioners Adopt Resolution Opposing Local Housing of Illegal Immigrants

Brunswick County

Brunswick County will not house illegal immigrants, including minors.  That’s the County Commissioners’ official response to the recent border surge.

Brunswick County Commissioner Pat Sykes proposed the resolution which was adopted unanimously Monday night.  Sykes says she is concerned for the safety of unaccompanied immigrant minors and the possibility of additional gang violence. Further, she says she wants to avoid the strain that healthcare for immigrants would cause to the taxpayer.

“My main concern was to be proactive. That if we don’t take a stand now, the federal government next month might come and say, ‘Okay, you’re taking this many.’ And I want our state to be on top of it if anything comes about.”

The County Commissioners will send a copy of the resolution to all one hundred counties in North Carolina, requesting their support.  The resolution will also be sent to elected officials representing the area, the governor’s office, and the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.
