NHC residents and businesses could see insurance premium drop

Residents and businesses in the unincorporated portions of New Hanover County could soon see a sizable drop in their homeowner’s insurance premiums.

WHQR’s Rachel Lewis Hilburn reports that County Fire Rescue officials are launching a series of meetings to explain what the ratings mean for property owners.  The county consolidated seven different fire districts into two – and the results of that streamlining effort are new, more efficient fire protection class ratings.

The new ratings kick in July 1st; and county officials say they’re fielding questions from area residents on what the ratings mean for the county, how to lower homeowners’ insurance costs, and how the ratings are calculated.  Ratings for property owners in the southern part of New Hanover County have dropped from a 9 to a 4; in the northern part of the county the rating went down to a 4/9E.

New Hanover County officials say that while property owners should talk directly with their insurance agents on specifics, the average savings on premiums is around 28%.

Fire Rescue officials will hold seven informal, drop-in-when-you-can question and answer sessions for county residents during the month of June.
