CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

WHQR/NCCF reef building a success

Saturday November 19th was a beautiful day on Stump Sound in Onslow County. Over 100 volunteers from WHQR, UNCW students, GE Volunteers and others gathered under the auspices of the North Carolina Coastal Federation to build an oyster reef. A long line snaked from the mainland to the sound, ferrying hundreds of bags of marl (marine limestone) as the base, and later bags of oyster shells to make up the reef itself.WHQR supported the Coastal Federation through a partnership in our summer 2011 2-day drive. Each pledge supported three bags, and donors were encouraged to help with the reef building. A day well spent cleaning up the sound, providing oysters and jobs for local fisherman.

WHQR Board member Ian Oeschger was there with his family and wrote about it for The Grove Project. Photos by Ian.

Thanks to the Coastal Federation, and to everyone who participated!
