By the 1890s, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community with a burgeoning African American middle class. In 1898, North Carolina’s white supremacist Democrats were plotting to take back the state legislature in November “by the ballot or bullet or both.” Join us on Tuesday, November 9 at the First Baptist Church (411 Market Street) at 6:30pm as Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Zucchino tells the story of intimidation and violence, stuffed ballot boxes, and armed men who killed at least 60 black men in the streets. It was not a “race riot” it was, in fact, an armed coup d’état by white supremacists intent on reclaiming power. The lecture will be moderated by Rhonda Bellamy. After the lecture, guests can cross the street to the Bellamy Mansion Museum where David Zucchino will hold a book signing. Guests can bring their books or purchase books from at the Bellamy Museum.
