Bill Ladd's Jazz Vipers: A Comeback with Gypsy and Swing Jazz Guitars

Bill Ladd, renowned as a founding member and guitarist of the beloved 90s Southeast college-circuit punk band, Johnny Quest, is out of retirement and playing Gypsy and early electric-era swing Jazz.

After a too-long hiatus from live performance, Bill is back with his latest musical venture, Bill Ladd’s Jazz Vipers, bringing the utterly toe-tapping and danceable sounds of Gypsy and Swing Jazz.

Bill Ladd rose to fame in the 90s with Johnny Quest, captivating audiences across the Southeast with their sweaty, frenetic, out-of-control punk energy. After many years away from music (or “the most dysfunctional relationship imaginable” as he likes to describe it), he succumbed to the irresistible pull of music once more – this time presenting his version of one of the earliest forms of guitar Jazz.

“I’m excited to be playing live again and stoked to be playing Bourgie Nights” Bill Says. He adds “I’m tickled pink to be accompanied by some fine Swing Jazz rippers – Jake Horton and Justin Lacy on guitar and Jones “Jonesy” Smith on upright bass.”

Bill Ladd is a seasoned guitarist and songwriter known for his work with the punk band Johnny Quest in the 90s. He then went on to play pedal steel with Whiskeytown, Two Dollar Pistols, Jolene, Wilmington faves Onward Soldiers, and others. He played Hawaiian steel guitar in Da Howlies, a Wilmington-based Hapa Haole group. He also fronted the “Wilmington Jazz Vipers” for many years and was involved in many other musical and acting projects along the way. With a renewed passion for Gypsy Swing Jazz, Ladd is dedicated to bringing his take on these classic sounds to the Wilmington audience.
