The program theme is "Land and Sea," and evokes the power of landscapes and seascapes to affect imagination and psychology. A mermaid's desires are captured in The Fair Melusina overture of Felix Mendelssohn. Mezzo-soprano Mary Gayle Greene joins the orchestra for Edward Elgar's settings of ocean-inspired poetry titled Sea Pictures.
And the paririe landscape of the American Midwest is the setting for Aaron Copland's opera The Tender Land, from which comes the closing suite performed by the WSO.
