Katelyn Freund

Artist's Reception: February 22, 2019

Show Closing: March 8, 2019

WHQR Public Radio is excited to announce the newly renovated MC Erny Gallery at WHQR will host the soft opening on Friday, January 25, from 6-8, of Have a Heart: SkyWatch, Art by Loulie Scharf.

Guests are invited to meet the artist and the WHQR staff and on-air personalities while enjoying great food and wine. There is an additional artist’s reception on Friday, February 22, 2019, and the show will remain on display until Friday, March 8, 2019. The first 200 people through the door on the February 22 artist's reception will receive a free handmade “pocket heart” by the artist, small one-of-a-kind hand-painted hearts made of plaster with a positive affirmation on each. A portion of the proceeds from any sale of art benefits WHQR, and a portion of the artist’s proceeds will be donated to SkyWatch Bird Rescue.

About the Show:

In her exhibition "Have a Heart: SkyWatch," artist Loulie Scharf depicts beautiful birds in mixed media creations that meld collage and painting. Her bright colors against assorted textures evoke whimsy while inviting the onlooker to step closer to examine the finer details. Scharf uses her art as a way to raise funds and awareness for animals, and for this particular show Scharf plans to donate half of the artist’s proceeds to SkyWatch Bird Rescue. From the smallest hummingbird to the giant pelican, no bird in need is ever turned away at SkyWatch. Birds receive medical care, food, safety, and rehabilitation until they can be placed in protected sanctuaries or returned back to the wild for “a chance to soar once more”

About the Artist:

Loulie Scharf is a full-time artist and art instructor living in Wilmington, North Carolina. She is a Georgia native, and her two lifelong passions are art and animals. Loulie owned a large-scale art school and now teaches mixed media at the Cameron Art Museum while developing a body of work. She is involved in a variety of roles at Cape Fear Academy, and also currently serves on the Board of the local chapter of the National Charity League, an organization of moms and daughters who volunteer together. Loulie’s family includes a happy and supportive husband, two energetic teenagers and seven rescued animals.
