At the old church at Castle Street & 5th Avenue-now called Terra Sol Sanctuary-a new Wilmington school held a fundraiser on Sunday: Yoga Fest, featuring short introductory yoga experiences, music, and a vegan buffet. The Wilmington Cooperative School is opening its doors for students on September 6, offering an alternative for elementary-aged students. The school will not separate students by age, there won't be any homework, and there will be no standardized testing. Guiding educational principles come from Montessori, Waldorf, Unschool, and Freeschool "schools" of thought. The cooperative structure is similar to the local Parents Community Preschool (PCP), including parents as caretakers of the school with only one paid employee: the teacher.
Listen to the interview above to hear one of the founders, Courtney Matheson, and another parent, Art Hill, talk about their hopes for their children this school year. Visit the school's website to learn about enrollment.
