A group called SignDance Collective International (SDCI) is coming to town to share their work in dance, theatre, and music with differently-abled performers. SDCI was created by Isolte Avila and David Bower in 2001. Avila has a physical disability, Bower is profoundly deaf; they have created a diverse performance group after developing SignDance Theatre in the late 1980s. The group will be undergoing rehearsals for a new piece called Carthage: A Letter From Afar (Carthage is not pronounced how you'd think). Workshops are also available: Folks who just want to dip their toes in and see what it's all about can take Basic Sign Theatre, while those who would like to commit a little more time and effort can join the Creative Devising Workshop, in which a performance is created.
Open rehearsals for Carthage are from 1:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday, 8/30 - Friday, 9/2, plus a preview of the performance on Saturday evening, 9/3. Stay tuned for more details, we'll talk to the group when they arrive in Wilmington on August 30th.
