Communique: "The Grand Shell Game" Brings Unique Sound To Wilmington With "Man On a Wire" Tour

"the grand shell game"

The Grand Shell Game, a band from Carrboro, has been making music for about 2 years. Singer/songwriter Eric-Scott Guthrie brought the musicians together; even though they came from a variety of musical backgrounds, things just worked, according to guitarist Daniel Fields. The band just released the EP, Man on a Wire. The tour is underway along the east coast; Wilmington will hear the music on Friday night, July 1st, at the Whiskey.

The Grand Shell Game "Man on a Wire" Tour. The Whiskey, downtown Wilmington, with Rebekah Todd & the Odyssey. Friday, July 1st, 10:00 pm.

Listen to our telephone interview with Fields above. He talks about the band's beginnings, the tour, and his favorite song from the EP: Love, a simple, elegant meditation that seems to breathe. The variety in the selections on this EP is astounding. The circus-like whirl of Note to Self doesn't necessarily propose a new understanding of life, but presents popular self-help mantras in a refreshing way, with the beginning lyric setting the tone: life is a herky jerky little ramble tamble kind of ramshackle ride on a train. it's insane. On to the grungy rock n' roll trip down the rabbit hole in Oracle. The title track  Man on a Wire might be a Zen meditation except for the fine but deep thread of social awareness (and the fact that you can't sit still listening to it). Overall-perhaps lyrically eecummings as a songwriter working with an army of well-versed multi-dimensional musicians.
