CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

New Hanover County Brings Back Commission for Women

New Hanover County Commissioners on Monday voted to approve a $20 million loan to help keep the Wilmington International Airport's terminal expansion and renovation project moving forward. In addition, the board brought back a commission that had been eliminated nine years ago.

The commissioners voted unanimously to reinstate the New Hanover County Commission for Women, which was first established in 1978 but then ended in 2010. The commission will focus on women’s health, leadership and connect to a statewide network of similar groups. Tufanna Thomas is Community Affairs Coordinator for New Hanover County.

“There are issues that impact women and this group will be a leader in bringing women's groups together to address those issues. There are times we know there are tons of women's organizations, but there isn't the glue to bring them all together. And this will be an organization, a committee that can bring them all together.”

New Hanover County will also proceed with a public-private redevelopment of the Government Center Complex near the intersection of Market Street and College Road. The property was originally designed as a mall, but was purchased by the county in the early 2000s. Vince Winkel, WHQR News.
