At Eternity’s Gate runs from Monday, January 28th thru Wednesday, January 30th. It screens Monday to Wednesday at 7pm with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm in Thalian Hall’s Main Theatre.
Academy Award Nominee Julian Schnabel's At Eternity's Gate is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world's most beloved and stunning works of art - Vincent van Gogh (Academy Award Nominee Willem Dafoe). This is not a forensic biography, but rather scenes based on van Gogh's letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are just plain invented. Famed but tormented, van Gogh spends his final years in Arles, France, painting masterworks of the natural world that surrounds him.
From the critics:
Dafoe delivers an impassioned and believable performance, his deeply lined face capturing the mix of agony and ecstasy — to borrow a phrase from another artistic biopic — that this tortured artist must have felt.
The film's deeply thoughtful dialogue, co-written by the legendary Jean-Claude Carrière, provides plenty of fascinating talk about the nature of art, painting, and existence.
