At a press conference on July 15th, Interim Superintendent Del Burns announced New Hanover County Schools would reopen with a hybrid plan combining in-class and remote learning. But as WHQR reports, Burns is now recommending a different option.

New Hanover County Schools issued a statement on Friday detailing what the Interim Superintendent plans to announce at Tuesday’s School Board meeting.

Ann Gibson is New Hanover County Schools Public Information Officer:

"Based upon concerns for the health and safety of students and staff, the Interim Superintendent is recommending at the July 28 Interim Board Meeting that New Hanover County Schools open and operate under Plan C through the first grading period of the 2020-2021 school year.”

Plan C involves remote learning with no in-class instruction for all students. A survey conducted by New Hanover County Schools indicated that teachers and parents shared concerns about the safety of returning to the classroom.

Gibson says there will be no opportunity for public input during the meeting, but that,

“The general public will have the option to view remotely via live streaming on Roku, Apple TV, and online at NHCS-TV.”

The Board of Education will vote Tuesday evening on Burns’s recommendation.
