Wilmington Gears Up For New Budget

This week the Wilmington City Council will begin the process of approving its budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, which begins July 1st.  The city has a $200.6 million budget on the table.

The state mandates that the city must have an approved and balanced budget in place by June 30.

It starts with this week’s public hearing in city council chambers. Then state law requires two votes on the budget at two separate meetings, which will be on June 4 and June 18.

Highlights of the new budget include no new taxes in the city, and increased funding for emergency response in the wake of last year’s Hurricane Florence.

And the current plan offers more competitive salaries for public safety personnel, stormwater and solid waste workers.

The proposed budget also increases community development funding, which focuses on increasing the supply of affordable rental housing in Wilmington.

The full budget is posted on the City of Wilmington website.
