NHC Board of Commissioners Candidate Julia Boseman (D) Aims to Bring in Business, Amend SUP

Julia Boseman

Democrat Julia Boseman was a New Hanover County commissioner before serving three terms in the North Carolina Senate. She’s been out of the political sphere for about five years, but now she’s back, running again for New Hanover County Board of Commissioners. Job creation is one of Boseman’s main goals, if elected.

In order to attract businesses, Julia Boseman says the special use permit—or SUP—needs to be modified. But she says industry needs to be regulated in order to protect the local environment. Using the proposed Titan cement plant as an example, she says she would not support any version of the SUP that would allow such a business to set up shop in New Hanover County:

"People think that Titan is gone. I disagree that Titan and those businesses are gone. I think that if Republicans have the majority in the county commission after the election that you’ll see maybe the special use permitting process either go away or it’s going to be much friendlier for businesses like Titan, who may bring a few jobs but the damage it will do to our environment is astronomical and beyond repair."

Boseman also supports the Garner report’s recommendation for the creation of an internal job development department.
