Rep. Walter Jones says he's appalled at NEH grant for local community college

Congressman Walter Jones is announcing his recent “NO” vote against a National Endowment for the Humanities’ grant for Craven Community College. The grant was awarded to CCC for a program called Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys

The grant will provide the New Bern community college with 25 books and a DVD to introduce Muslim cultures to Americans.

Representative Jones, whose district includes part of New Hanover County and all of Pender, opposes any federal spending to fund the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In a prepared statement, Jones calls the program an appalling waste of taxpayer money.

He says, “It makes zero sense for the U.S. government to borrow money from China in order to promote the culture of Islamic civilizations.”

If Craven Community College accepts the grant, says Jones, he will call on college leaders to give equal exposure to books about Christianity and America’s Judeo-Christian heritage.

In support of that end, the Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition will donate 25 books.
