Poll Shows Growing Support for Same-Sex Marriage Rights

Six out of ten North Carolinians would oppose an amendment to the state constitution to prevent any same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions. That’s according to a poll last week out of Elon University.

WHQR’s Michelle Bliss reports that voters will have their say on the amendment when they head to the polls for the May primary.

The poll also found that 32 percent of state residents would support the amendment.

John Robinson is the director of communications for the Elon University Poll. He says these results reflect a national trend and that opposition to any type of legal recognition for same-sex couples has been on the decline for a year while support for full marriage rights has been increasing.

The poll surveyed more than 500 residents and 38 percent of those respondents say they support same-sex marriage while 29 percent support civil unions or partnerships but not full marriage rights.
