Anti-Marriage Amendment Rally Draws Crowd in Wilmington

Wilmington Faith and Values
About 100 people attended the Race to the Ballot final rally in Wilmington's Riverfront Park on Friday, March 2.

On the North Carolina primary ballot in May, voters will see an amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman as the only domestic legal union recognized in the state.

Groups for and against the amendment have started lobbying tours at churches, malls and parks.

Amanda Greene of Wilmington Faith and Values reports that the Race to the Ballot rally in Riverfront Park Friday attracted about 100 people against the amendment.

Rev. John McLaughlin, pastor of St. Jude’s Metropolitan Community Church in Wilmington, called the amendment “pure hatred.” McLaughlin, lobbyists and politicians spoke on Friday.

Rally attendees greeted Jen Jones of Protect All NC Families who jogged from Raleigh to Wilmington. She was raising awareness of what she says are the amendment’s potential civil rights and financial implications for families.

Groups pushing for the amendment started their own statewide Values Bus Tour this week. Vote for Marriage NC and three other groups have scheduled stops in Raleigh, Charlotte and Winston-Salem.

Calls to Vote for Marriage NC were not returned.
