NHCo First in Nation to Deploy "Super Wi-Fi" Network

After pioneering the switch from analog to digital television, New Hanover County is once again being used as a launch pad for testing the newest information technology.

WHQR’s Sara Wood reports next week the county will launch the first “Super Wi-Fi” network in the nation, which will increase communication signal strength and distance.

The county will launch what is known as the “TV white space network,” using the abandoned analog television spectrum that was replaced by digital TV four years ago. The white space network expands signal coverage and strength up to 16 times that of current Wi-Fi networks. The county and the City of Wilmington have been testing pilot projects like providing Wi-Fi and video surveillance in the Creekwood housing development. The new technology has also been used to collect water quality data in environmentally-sensitive areas that would have required trenching of wires. The county will unveil the network next week in Hugh MacRae Park, Airlie Gardens and Veterans Park.
