NH Co. School Board Taps Markley

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – The New Hanover County School Board has selected Tim Markley as the next superintendent.

The school board voted unanimously for Markley, who is the current superintendent for Catawba County.

New Hanover County School Board member Nick Rhodes says the vote speaks to the quality of Markley's character and ability. Rhodes says while support for Markley from parents and business leaders played a key role, it was his track record that sealed the deal.

"He has one of the highest graduation rates in the state, and he has one of the lowest dropout rates in the state. And he did it with about $1,000 less per student than we're spending here in New Hanover County."

Markley beat out 41 candidates for the superintendent job, including current New Hanover County Assistant Superintendent Rick Holiday. Rhodes says Markley starts November 1st.
