City Council to Vote on Bars and Sweepstakes Parlors

By Laurin Penland

Wilmington, NC – Wilmington City Council will vote Tuesday on two controversial issues: the downtown bar scene and sweepstakes parlors.

To get the point across that it has its hands full with downtown nightlife, Wilmington Police showed city council video of large crowds filling the streets at 2 o'clock in the morning.

Now, city council will get the chance to vote on a resolution that would make it more difficult for businesses to get ABC licenses. Councilman Kevin O'Grady campaigned on limiting the number of bars downtown.

"We're going to finally, after not just a year, but after years of people pointing out that we had a serious problem with nightlife downtown, city council is going to finally deal with it."

City council will also vote on whether to charge sweepstakes business owners three thousand dollars per machine. There are more than five-hundred machines in Wilmington.
