Weather System Churns Off Coast

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – A low pressure system is churning off the North Carolina coast.

The National Weather Service says the system was discovered off the Cape Fear coast Wednesday morning and is moving northeast toward Cape Hatteras.

National Weather Service meteorologist Reid Hawkins says a chilly ocean is putting the breaks on this low pressure system from developing into a tropical system. He says it's normal for this time of year.

"In the early part of the hurricane, tropical season we do see that kind of form and there's some things that will form off the southeast coast - genesis area the Carolinas down into off Georgia, Florida."

Hawkins says the weather system's biggest impact was that it pushed away afternoon thunderstorms that were on track for southeastern North Carolina. He says the low pressure system is moving at around 10 mph.
