Wilmington, NC – Lake Waccamaw residents are trying to save more than 400 acres of wetlands from clear-cutting.

The area at risk is Cove Swamp and its owner, a company called The Riverstone Group, has plans to log.

The state has offered $650,000 to buy the land to preserve it. Riverstone has agreed--if an additional $50,000 can be raised.

Lake Waccamaw State Park Superintendent Chris Helms says saving Cove Swamp is worth the cost.

"There is the real risk that any new logging or timbering could foul the nearby waters. It could cause a lot of sediment, a lot of organic material, a lot of things to be put into water that would make it into the lake. So, we feel like it would be very detrimental to the lake."

Residents are chipping in to save Cove Swamp and have raised $25,000 so far.
