Wilmington, NC – The last high security prison planned for North Carolina opened its doors to employees Monday.
The North Carolina Department of Corrections says the prison in Tabor City will help relieve the state's growing jail backlog and overcrowding. The new prison for men has 1,500 cells. State Senator RC Soles Jr. says more than half of the prison's employees are from Columbus County.
"And because of the nature of the building and the facility, it's not likelihood that those jobs are going to move overseas or anything. It's also not likely that hard times they're going to be a laid off workforce."
The prison will cost the state $28-million a year to run. Prisoners move into the Tabor Correctional Institution next month.
