WPD Cracking Down on Duck Hunters

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – A growing number of Wilmington residents in the Landfall area are calling Wilmington police about gunfire from duck hunters.

Wilmington police say they've received a number of calls over the past week about duck hunting in the creeks that run off of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Some of the creeks are in the county and some are inside city limits, where it's illegal to fire a gun even for hunting.

Wilmington Police Lt. Jeff Allsbrook says he thinks hunters are confused about which creeks are outside city limits.

I need them to understand if they're in Hewlett's Creek or Bradley Creek or Shinn Creek those all are within the city and it's against the law.

Allsbrook says this is the first time in his more than 20 years on the force that he's seen this many calls about duck hunting.

According to North Carolina Wildlife Resources the season ends next Saturday.
